AWS Adds OpenAI GPT-5.6, GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 to Canadian Bedrock

AWS Machine LearningOct 20, 2026

Amazon Bedrock users in two Canadian AWS Regions can now invoke OpenAI GPT-5.6, GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 through cross-Region inference.

On October 20, 2026, AWS announced that customers using Amazon Bedrock from Canada (Central) and Canada West (Calgary) can access OpenAI’s GPT-5.6, GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 model families through cross-Region inference. The available options include GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna; GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna; and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Customers send requests through a Bedrock endpoint in their Canadian source Region. AWS routes each request to a supported destination Region, drawing on a wider pool of inference capacity without requiring applications to manage the destination routing. Users can select a US geographic profile, which limits processing to Canada and the United States, or a global profile that can route to supported commercial AWS Regions. Profile availability varies: for example, the global profile for GPT-5.6 is available from Canada (Central), while Calgary users must use its US geographic profile.

The models can be called through the OpenAI Responses API, Chat Completions API or Amazon Bedrock Converse API. AWS says they accept text and image inputs, support a one-million-token context window and provide reasoning and tool-calling features. Prompt caching is also supported; eligible prefixes of at least 1,024 tokens can be cached automatically, with subsequent cached-token reads billed at a discount.

For Canadian customers, data at rest—including invocation logs, knowledge bases and configurations—remains in the source Region by default, while inference computation occurs in the destination Region. AWS says requests are encrypted in transit, and model providers do not ordinarily have access to prompts or completions. One exception concerns content flagged by automated abuse classifiers, which may be retained in the destination Region for up to 30 days. Teams with stricter geographic requirements can choose the US profile and should account for destination-region permissions and model-specific quotas when configuring deployments.

Industry Impact

More GPT options for Canadian cloud teams

Cloud services, enterprise AI

Overview

Canadian development and ML teams can now invoke OpenAI’s GPT-5.6, GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 models through Amazon Bedrock in two AWS Regions. Cross-Region inference expands access to AWS inference capacity without requiring applications to manage destination routing. Teams can use familiar OpenAI or Bedrock APIs, with text and image inputs, reasoning, tool calling and a one-million-token context window. Data at rest remains in the source Region by default, but inference computation occurs elsewhere, so technical and compliance teams should assess geographic processing requirements.

Key Impact Points

Bedrock users in Canada (Central) and Canada West (Calgary) gain access to the listed GPT model families.

Cross-Region inference handles destination routing and can draw on a wider pool of inference capacity.

Teams should weigh US or global routing options against destination-region permissions, quotas and data-processing requirements.

Opportunities

Build Bedrock-powered AI workflows

Enterprise software, cloud services

Organizations can use the newly available models to add text- and image-based reasoning or tool-calling workflows to applications already built around Amazon Bedrock. The supported OpenAI Responses and Chat Completions APIs, alongside the Bedrock Converse API, offer integration options for development teams. Prompt caching can reduce the billed cost of eligible cached-token reads, while cross-Region inference removes the need for applications to manage destination routing. Before deployment, teams should confirm their chosen geographic profile, permissions and model quotas, and assess whether inference processing outside the source Region fits their requirements. The article does not establish a specific revenue opportunity or quantify savings.

  • Integrate GPT models into Canadian Bedrock applications

Problem: Teams seeking to add advanced language-model capabilities must manage model access, API integration and regional deployment considerations.

Solution: Invoke the available GPT models through Amazon Bedrock APIs and use cross-Region inference to handle destination routing.

Target Users: Software developers and ML teams building applications for Canadian organizations.

Business Value: Access to text and image inputs, reasoning, tool calling and a one-million-token context window, with prompt caching for eligible requests.

Revenue Potential: The article provides no direct revenue estimate; potential value is tied to the applications and workflows organizations build.
