AWS outlined how ISO/IEC 42005:2025 can help organizations assess AI impacts and connect those reviews with broader enterprise risk management.
AWS published guidance on October 6, 2026, describing how organizations can use ISO/IEC 42005:2025 to structure assessments of AI systems’ impacts. The standard addresses how to identify and document potential effects on organizations, individuals, communities, groups and society, then feed findings into risk-management decisions.
The assessment process can cover privacy, discrimination and system performance, among other concerns. AWS says ISO/IEC 42005 can fit into existing company review processes, including risk, privacy and cybersecurity assessments. Its Annex D offers guidance for coordinating reviews and avoiding duplicate work; Annex E provides a template for organizations that prefer a standalone assessment.
The standard covers the assessment lifecycle, from scoping and analysis through reporting, monitoring and review. It also outlines when to reassess a system and how to set triggers. Changes to an AI system or its operating environment, as well as legal requirements, contracts, internal policies and customer expectations, may indicate that a new review is warranted. A preliminary triage can help determine whether a more comprehensive assessment is needed.
AWS recommends documenting an AI system’s intended uses, foreseeable misuse, development data and underlying components, deployment environment, and the people or communities that could be affected. The standard also calls for evaluating both potential benefits and harms, using objectives such as fairness, reliability, privacy and security, and considering input from diverse stakeholders.
The guidance connects impact assessments with wider AI governance and ISO/IEC 42001, the AI management systems standard. AWS says its Responsible AI Lens and ISO/IEC 42001 implementation guide can support this work. It also lists Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Q Business, Amazon Textract and Amazon Transcribe among its services with ISO/IEC 42001 certification. AWS cautions that its material is general guidance, not a complete route to compliance: organizations remain responsible for context-specific assessments required by standards or regulators.
