General Motors will introduce an in-car OnStar AI assistant that can answer vehicle-specific questions and handle selected voice-controlled tasks.
General Motors announced that its OnStar AI Assistant will debut in the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq through an over-the-air software update in the coming months, with additional GM vehicles expected to follow. The assistant is designed to use vehicle information and GM knowledge to respond to drivers’ requests, rather than act as a general-purpose chatbot detached from the car.
GM’s examples include asking the system to adjust cabin temperature, check whether the vehicle has enough range for a destination and map charging stops, or explain a dashboard warning. The company also says drivers can ask about vehicle-specific features such as one-pedal driving and lane-keeping assistance, or request real-time information about tire pressure, range and charging status. When a question requires human help, the assistant can connect the driver to an OnStar advisor.
The announcement positions conversational AI as an interface for connected-car functions and support. Instead of navigating menus or consulting separate materials, drivers would be able to make selected requests by voice and receive answers tailored to their vehicle. That approach may make vehicle information easier to access, but its effectiveness will depend on the system’s reliability, how it handles ambiguous requests and whether voice interaction actually reduces distraction while driving.
GM says customers will control whether features are activated and can manage permissions for the camera, microphone, location and AI. The company says users will be able to see what information a feature uses and why; it also states that camera recordings are time-limited, encrypted and inaccessible to GM. These are company-described safeguards, and drivers will still need to review settings and understand what data each feature requires.
GM plans to extend the connected experience to a new OnStar app starting in 2027. The app is intended to bring together vehicle functions and connected services, and will replace the current OnStar Guardian app and the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicle apps. GM also described an OnStar Fleet AI Assistant for fleet managers, which can answer natural-language questions about vehicle data to help identify trends and manage operations.
