Incarna Puts Per-Request AI Inference Payments Into Production on Base

AWS Machine LearningOct 8, 2026

Incarna integrated AWS AgentCore payments with BlockRun’s x402 inference service, processing more than 1,000 individually settled beta payments.

Incarna has put an AI-agent payment workflow into production on the Base network, using Amazon Bedrock AgentCore payments to pay BlockRun for model inference one request at a time. AWS described the integration on October 8, reporting that Incarna completed the work in three days—one day to build and two to test—using roughly 200 lines of application code. The project had originally been scoped for two to three months.

The system connects an Incarna agent to BlockRun, an inference router that AWS says serves more than 90 models from over 15 providers. When a model request reaches a paid endpoint, BlockRun returns a price and an HTTP 402 payment challenge. AgentCore payments checks the quote against the session’s spending limit, signs the payment through the agent’s wallet and returns proof that BlockRun can verify before serving the inference.

Incarna provisions wallets through the Coinbase CDP connector. Customers own the wallets and authorize Incarna to use them. Transactions settle individually in USDC on Base, and AWS says each payment is verifiable on-chain. During the beta, agents processed more than 1,000 payments, with charges ranging from $0.001 to $0.05 per call.

A key control is that spending ceilings are enforced by AgentCore payments at the infrastructure layer, rather than left to the agent’s prompt or application logic. Payment sessions also expire; Incarna sizes them to a day’s budget. The integration supports x402’s “exact” option for known prices and “upto” for variable costs, where the agent authorizes a maximum and the provider settles for actual usage up to that limit.

The example demonstrates a specific way to handle frequent, low-value model calls without a separate subscription for each provider. BlockRun supplies and meters inference, while AgentCore payments handles payment authorization and limits. AWS says the managed capability also works with other x402-compatible endpoints, including Amazon Bedrock inference endpoints.

Industry Impact

AI agents can pay per inference call

AI services, cloud infrastructure, digital payments

Overview

Incarna’s production workflow shows how an AI agent can pay for model inference one request at a time, rather than relying on a separate provider subscription. For developers and product teams, the integration offers a concrete pattern for connecting agents to metered services while enforcing spending limits outside the agent’s prompt. Business leaders and finance teams can assess whether individually settled USDC payments fit their cost controls and service models. The beta’s 1,000-plus payments demonstrate operation at small transaction values, but do not establish broader adoption or long-term economics.

Key Impact Points

Agents can access BlockRun’s multi-provider inference through per-call payments, with beta charges of $0.001 to $0.05.

Infrastructure-level spending ceilings and expiring sessions provide controls beyond prompt instructions or application logic.

The three-day implementation suggests a relatively lightweight integration, though the result is one company’s beta deployment.

Opportunities

Metered access to AI services

AI platforms, cloud services, digital payments

The integration illustrates an opportunity for AI service providers and agent developers to support pay-per-use access to inference and other metered endpoints. An x402-compatible payment flow can let agents request a service, receive its price, and authorize payment within a defined limit, avoiding a separate subscription for each provider. Businesses could use this pattern where workloads make frequent, low-value calls across multiple services. The article demonstrates the approach with BlockRun and AgentCore payments, including individually settled USDC transactions on Base; it does not establish broader customer demand or profitability. Providers considering adoption should assess user-owned wallet authorization, session budgets, variable-price settlement, and operational fit.

  • Pay-per-call access to model inference

Problem: Subscriptions for individual providers may be a poor fit for agents making frequent, low-value calls across multiple inference services.

Solution: Enable x402-compatible endpoints to quote a request price and accept an agent-authorized payment subject to a spending limit.

Target Users: AI service providers and teams building agents that use metered model inference.

Business Value: Supports usage-based access and gives operators a way to constrain agent spending at the infrastructure layer.

Revenue Potential: Providers may earn revenue from individually metered calls; the article does not quantify commercial returns.
