OpenAI introduced reusable Codex cloud environments alongside voice controls, code review features, repository security scanning, and updates to its developer APIs.
OpenAI announced a broad Codex update at its DevDay on September 29, 2026, adding reusable cloud development environments alongside changes to its command-line interface, code review tools, and security offerings. The environments are designed to persist between tasks rather than treating each remote job as a separate sandbox. Developers can access them from different devices and share workspaces configured with team-approved settings and permissions.
The refreshed Codex CLI lets developers start and direct tasks by voice. A new “/agents” view is intended to help users delegate work and monitor several tasks at once; other changes support editing prompts, resuming sessions, and using worktrees. OpenAI also said it is introducing a redesigned terminal interface intended to make longer working sessions easier to follow.
Codex is also being added to a code review experience in the ChatGPT desktop app. Developers can inspect summaries and code changes, ask about possible problems, and provide feedback on GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests. Automatic reviews can run while a developer is away from their computer, according to OpenAI.
For security work, Codex Security Cloud can scan GitHub repositories on demand, on a schedule, or when new commits arrive. The tools can investigate findings, consolidate duplicates, and prepare fixes in the cloud. OpenAI says the offering includes access to models from its cybersecurity initiative without requiring a separate application.
The announcement also included API changes beyond Codex. A Decisions API uses Luna to answer user-defined questions with predefined responses, while an updated Agents API supports computer use and Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents. That latter capability allows developers to build OpenAI agents that run entirely on AWS. The announcement extends Codex from remote coding tasks toward more persistent, shared development and review workflows.
