OpenAI plans U.S. test of ads displayed beside ChatGPT-generated images

TechCrunchOct 5, 2026

OpenAI will test labeled visual ads beside ChatGPT image results in the U.S. later in October, while expanding advertiser measurement partnerships.

OpenAI plans to begin testing visual display ads alongside images generated in ChatGPT in the United States later in October 2026. The initial placements will feature products and services from a test group of advertisers. OpenAI says the ads will be labeled and will not affect the answers ChatGPT provides.

The format gives advertisers a way to place imagery beside a user’s generated result rather than relying only on other ad formats. The test is limited to the U.S. at launch; the article describes global availability as a later possibility, not part of the current rollout. OpenAI has not specified when an expansion would happen.

Alongside the new placements, OpenAI is broadening tools and partnerships for measuring ad performance. Its click-attribution partners include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin. Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL are listed as partners for full-funnel and advanced measurement. Haus, Measured and WorkMagic will help advertisers explore geo-based experiments.

OpenAI is also working with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science on brand-suitability evaluation pilots. Those efforts are intended to help advertisers assess the environment in which their ads appear; the article does not describe the pilots as a completed verification system.

The visual test extends the company’s existing advertising efforts. OpenAI introduced ads earlier in 2026 to support free and lower-cost ChatGPT plans, then expanded them to India in August. The company’s advertising expansion comes as it builds measurement and suitability offerings around the product. The article cites 1.2 billion weekly users as a potential future audience for advertisers if the ads eventually roll out globally, rather than a reach figure for this initial U.S. test.
