Replit CEO Amjad Masad says OpenAI models now power the platform by default, while customers can still select Anthropic and other supported models.
Replit has made OpenAI its preferred model partner for Replit Agent, CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad told TechCrunch in comments published October 17, 2026. The change makes OpenAI the platform’s default, but does not remove Anthropic models: Masad said users can continue choosing Claude or other supported options.
Masad cited cost, performance and the partnership as reasons for the decision. He said Replit uses internal evaluations and has also published a benchmark, and that OpenAI’s Sol and Astra models performed better on building applications from scratch in those tests. The article does not provide benchmark scores or a direct comparison of model costs.
The shift follows Replit’s OpenAI partnership announcement in August. Before that agreement, the company relied on Anthropic’s Claude models, and Masad said Replit had until recently been one of Anthropic’s five largest customers. TechCrunch also reported that people familiar with the relationship disputed the idea that the partnership had ended. The continued availability of Anthropic models, as well as Replit’s recent promotion of Claude models, adds context to the CEO’s description of OpenAI as the preferred partner rather than the only provider.
Masad also described a growing business customer base. He said enterprise contracts accounted for about 2% of revenue the previous year and about 15% in 2026, while business-to-business revenue exceeded 50%. He did not disclose annual recurring revenue. He told TechCrunch he expects enterprise and government customers to generate more than half of Replit’s revenue in 2027; that is a forecast, not a reported result.
For Replit users, the immediate practical change is which provider is selected by default when using Replit Agent. Customers retain model choice, while the company’s stated preference reflects its own assessment of performance, economics and its partnership with OpenAI.
