Berlin-based Restate raised a $20 million Series A led by Singular, with plans to grow its team and compete in durable workflow infrastructure.
Restate raised a $20 million Series A led by Singular, with Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures also participating, TechCrunch reported on September 30, 2026. The Berlin-based company builds software intended to keep multi-step workflows running consistently through crashes and network interruptions, a capability its co-founder Stephen Ewan says is increasingly relevant to AI agent systems.
Ewan told TechCrunch that Restate was not originally designed for agents. The company’s execution engine was built to make workflows resilient, and he said that feature has proved useful as customers manage agent processes that can run longer and follow less predictable paths than conventional software. He described the system’s goal as tracking work so interrupted processes can be reproduced and reach consistent outcomes.
Restate says it has signed multiple six- and seven-figure customer contracts in recent months, according to Ewan. Replit is among its customers, and Ewan also said the company serves Fortune 500 businesses, including in financial services. TechCrunch reported that the startup developed its own storage, replication and redundancy layers rather than building the engine on an external database; Ewan said this makes the system fast and lightweight.
The new funding is intended to help Restate build a go-to-market team, hire additional engineers and expand its San Francisco Bay Area office. The company is positioning itself against Temporal, a larger provider of durable workflow infrastructure. TechCrunch reported that Temporal announced a $550 million Series E at a $12.55 billion valuation earlier in September. The figures reflect the competitive backdrop, but do not establish a direct comparison of the companies’ products or customer bases.
Ewan co-created Apache Flink and later served as CTO of Data Artisans, which Alibaba acquired in 2019 and rebranded as Ververica. Restate’s other co-founders, Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann, previously worked with him at Data Artisans and Ververica. Ewan told TechCrunch he expects durable workflow tools could eventually be useful beyond technology companies, but that is his outlook rather than a confirmed adoption timeline.
