Microsoft’s Nvidia-based Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is available to preorder for $5,999, with shipping scheduled to begin in November.
Microsoft has opened preorders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a developer-focused mini PC priced at $5,999. The company expects shipments to begin in November. The system was introduced alongside the Surface Laptop Ultra.
The Dev Box runs on Nvidia’s Arm-based RTX Spark platform and includes 128GB of unified memory, with a 100-watt thermal envelope. Its flat, 3D-printed anodized aluminum chassis also serves as a heatsink. Microsoft is positioning the machine for local AI development, including work with models exceeding 120 billion parameters.
The intended workloads include testing AI models, prototyping agents and running AI coding tools on the device. Microsoft is also shipping the computer with a developer-oriented Windows 11 Pro setup and a set of preinstalled tools: Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub CLI, GitHub Copilot, Windows Subsystem for Linux, Python and Node.
At $5,999, the Dev Box is more expensive than Nvidia’s DGX Spark mini PC, which launched the previous year. The Verge notes that pricing for PCs has been rising amid shortages of memory and other components. The article does not provide a detailed comparison of the two systems’ configurations or performance, so the price difference alone does not establish how they compare for particular developer workloads.
The machine’s combination of substantial unified memory and local computing is aimed at developers who want to work with large models on-device. Its preinstalled software also gives buyers a ready-made development environment, while the November shipping target provides the current expected availability timeline.
